Ribeye Fest 2006

Another celebration of God's grace in my life: Yes, I passed my recital hearing yesterday.. It's all truly truly His blessing; I couldn't ask for me. Honestly, it wasn't a great performance. I would have accepted it just fine if they were to fail me.. coz i thought i deserved it.
Guess what... 4 out of 4 of my committee members passed me: they TRUSTed me; they believed that I would do a better job in 2+ weeks until the actual recital on October 31, 2006. I re-learn the meaning of GRACE that day...

As always.. what else would you do to celebrate such a blessing?? MAKANN......

Ribeye Fest 2006 it is!

Ohh.. that medium-rare cooked meat that is perfectly marinated with grill seasoning, garlic-herb powder, soya sauce, and worcestershire sauce.. hmm... and when you have the 1st bite of it.... the juicyness of the tender meat... yummm-0000... (pada ngiler ngga? hehehe...)

Finally this ribeye steak dinner is actually happening after i've been bugged for the past 3 months.. hehee.. here are the buggers!

not just the steak... it involved a couple ruthless chefs... :-)

... and of course, a silly guest...

and great times of laughter and fun...

...Celebrating HIS goodness and kindness...

Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills,
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip,
He who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, He who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you,
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm,
He will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
-Amen-

(Dangerously) Careless

It seems like i've been living a (dangerously) careless life for the past 48 hours. Check this out:

  1. Sunday morning right before I left for church, I realized that my keys were no where to be found. (kunci segambreng itu lho...) my apartment key, car key, mailbox key, piano lab keys. All of them. I was looking high and low in my apartment. Suddenly I was thinking.. *could it be there?* Ahaaa.. i was right: It was hanging on the door knob OUTSIDE my apartment for the ENTIRE NIGHT!
  2. This morning as i drove away from the post office, suddenly I felt a lot of air blowing right beside me.. Guess what? My car door was hanging open in the air. I didn't shut my door. No no.. i didn't even close my car door before I drove off! What am I doing? Luckily it was still in the parking lot and there's no car right beside my car.
  3. This afternoon around 2pm as I opened my locker to keep my books after teaching class piano, a friend approched me and said, "Pink, somebody found your wallet in the parking lot. It's in the business office right now. Go and get it." I was like.. whattt?? Did i lose my wallet? Really?? (pasang tampang bingung). Eh, ternyata bener.. I didn't realize that it fell off my bag as I walked in the building this morning.

I guess my guardian angels are working extra hard for the past few days... hehehehehe... ;-)
Thank You LORD for Your protection and grace. I'm still alive, no robbery, no accident, everything is intact. Semoga besok2 ngga ceroboh lagi.. :P

A day off

Apa daya.. manusia memang terbatas.

Kamis lalu, abis pulang dari nonton concert tiba2 berasa aneh.. what's going on? Eh ternyata besoknya gw dilawat sama sakit leher, hidung tersumbat, dan teman2 lainnya.. Kemaren waktu studio class -- jam 6 sore (after a long day of teaching class piano, private students, accompanying 2 voice lessons, 1 double bass lesson, and opera), I used my last bit of concentration to perform the 15-minute long Schumann's Papillon for the class. Guess what?

After the not-so-satisfying performance i sat downand Doc said, "Pink, you look pale.."
I was sweating.. (biasanya ngga gitu kalo maen buat studio class) and i knew i was finally done for the day. Couldn't think anymore..

Stress + panic attack + bad weather + flu berat (hari ini ditambah fever) = stay home!

I just hope that my physique would cooperate.. the hearing is coming up really soon. If i can't pull things together i might need to postpone the hearing..
Not thinking about it at the moment. I need a long nap now. Adios!

Am i ready? NOOO!! *sigh*

kalo udah stress begini mendingan ngapain coba? apalagi kalo bukan masuk dapur! hehehee.. alhasil, lunch dinner besok lusa bakal mewah.. :-) You want some?

Farewell Brother..

People come and go in our life; some left strong imprints, some are easily forgotten.
Today is a special Sunday in our church; the worship team was in front and our dearest brother Peter Li was serving with us on his last Sunday worship in Morgantown.

Peter Li... a brother in Christ who has left a strong impact in us.

At school, he is known as the associate Dean of the International student office in WVU. He's the guy you need to deal with if you have any problem with your I-20, and he's also the guy who will protect you if you are questioned by the FBI regarding you immigration status.
At church, he is a deacon, spiritual elder, Sunday worship administrator, song leader, usher, the cook, the joker, and the crowd pleaser. For me, he is a partner (in worship department), co-worker (in fellowship ministries), music-making buddy, pingpong partner/opponent, the best wanton noodle cook, somebody i can call if there's an emergency...

Today we acknowledge, honor, and bless our brother during the service. Peter is going back to Hong Kong to serve in his almamater, Hong Kong Baptist University, after serving in WVU for 18 years in Morgantown. All of the deacons and elders came out to lay hands on him and pray for him. It is hard to let go of somebody that has shared many years of tears and laughter with us. We will definitely miss him tremendously.. but we all know that God has a better plan for him, his career, and his future in HK.

May the LORD bless you and keep you..
Farewell brother..

Let's kick it up a notch!!

The semester is rolling and the pressure is on.
Guess what, the date is set for my next solo recital: October 31 it is!
Kalo di-itung2, tinggal 8 minggu sampe hari H.. belon lagi dipotong 3 minggu, October 11 for the hearing. Yah beginilah tradisinya. Basically sebelon doctoral recital, committee member harus 'sensor' apakah kita udah siap dan layak buat kasih recital. Kalo hearing ngga lewat... yah, tunggu beberapa bulan lagi deh. Nasibb!!

Beberapa langkah serius sudah diambil demi menjamin terlaksananya recital kali ini, i.e. I've made my own lesson plan for every single piano lesson: basically i have to have a movement of music memorized every time I go for my lesson until hearing day!

Here's my recital program:
Beethoven Sonata (4 mvt)
Schumann Papillon (13 short mvt)
Gianneo Suite (3 mvt)
Granados Goyescas (2 mvt)

Fiuuhhh... banyaknyaaaaa!!!
No matter what, i gotta press on and make this recital happen if i really want to graduate on time next May. There's no time to waste, no weekend to slumber.. hihihihi.. (i gotta put those Korean dramas aside for while).

Gua yakin teman2 yg laen yg masih berstatus pelajar pasti punya target dan harapan masing2 di semester ini. Continue to keep each other in prayer and let's kick it up a notch!

The Screwtape Letters

"But hatred is best combined with Fear. Cowardice, alone of all the vices, is purely painful--horrible to anticipate, horrible to fell, horrible to remember; Hatred has its pleasure. It is therefore often the compensation by which a frightened man reimburses himself for the miseries of Fear. The more he fears, the more he will hate. And Hatred is also a great anodyne for shame. To make a deep wound in his charity, you should therefore first defeat his courage."

Quoted from Screwtape (the senior devil)'s letter #29 to Wormwood, his beloved cousin (the junior devil).

Know your ENEMIES and all his tricks. Let us not fall into the lure and temptations that they have set before us.

Welcome Fall 2006

Fall semester 2006 sudah bergulir 4 hari. Rasanya masih belon apa2 nih... jadwal masih pada kosong2 (soalnya masih belon finalize semuanya). Yah maklum lah jadwal semester ini ngga segila semester2 sebelumnya soalnya kelas2 buat degree gua udah gua lahap habis semester lalu, dan akhir Juni lalu udah selesai comprehensive exam juga (tapi hasilnya masih belon tau). How nice how nice.. no more homework, paper, whatsoever.. hihihi.. [harap jangan ngiri]. Tapi jangan salah, selain ngajar 2 class piano buat non-piano music major and opera accompanying (for my assistantship), vocal dan instrumental accompanying (for fun and extra money, of course), private piano teaching, dan komitmen pelayanan di gereja, gua bakal disibukkan dengan 2 'tugas' khusus yg bakal menyita banyak waktu dan perhatian: recital dan dissertation.

Rencananya sih mau bikin 2 solo recital selama 1 taon ini: 1 sekitar akhir Oct/awal Nov, dan 1 lagi bulan Mei taon depan. Kata orang2 itu ambisius.. emang sih rada ambisius, soalnya kan mau lulus Spring 2007. Yah.. we'll see how it goes.

Dissertation.... hmmm... gimana dan dari mana yah mulainya?? duhh.. rasanya masih gelap! Besok mau meeting sama dosen pembimbing, Dr. Andrew Kohn (si Jewish genius), for the 1st time. Semoga dia ngga bakal terlalu demanding for the 1st week.. lagian besok gw bakal kasih Jasmine Teh Sosro buat dia, oleh-oleh dari Indonesia, tanah air beta..

Anyway, let's leave those business aside for a while.
Kita2, anggota college group, bakal terlibat dengan acara besok: 2 lagu sudah dipersiapkan -- We are One Big Family in Jesus dan Open Your Heart for Him. Buat lagu yg pertama, kita bakal ngucapin judul lagu itu dengan berbagai chinese dialects, dari Hokkien, Hakka, Cantonese, Hunan, NanJing, FuZhou, dan guess what.. special me.. gw kebagian -- bahasa yg satu -- BAHASA INDONESIA! Duhh.. bangganya....

Well that's not the main point.. semoga lagu2 yg bakal kita persembahkan bisa mengajak mereka utk membuka hati bagi Sang Juru Selamat.. the Alpha and Omega..

Welcome new students.. Welcome Fall 2006!!

Kilasan Summer 2006

Liburan musim panas akhirnya usai sudah. Time flies! Banyak hal2 unik, menarik, mengesankan, dan yg mengenaskan terjadi selama summer 2006 ini. Ternyata setelah dipikir-pikir, banyak pengalaman yg terhitung "my first experience" selama liburan kali ini.

  1. pertama kali muntah 5x dalam sehari gara2 maen di Amusement Park.
What an embarrassing day: i puked every 2 rides!! malu2in ngga seehhh??
Believe it or not.. mereka ngga terima tips.. emang dampak Revolusi kebudayaan dan ideologi komunisme masih lekat di hati masyarakat. Selama maen disana, terasa banget kalo ada gap yg lumayan gede antara anak muda dan kaum manula: generasi mudanya udah E-era, tapi kaum manulanya masih hidup di Mao-era. Terasa banget cultural shock dan gapnya. But no matter what, China is still a great and beautiful nation. (below: ShenZhen's Village of the Chinese Culture -- China miniature)

We also stopped by Macau, the tiny island attached to China that was conquered by the Portuguese for a long time. Tiny, but yet loaded with history and unique culture. It is still known as the "Asian Las Vegas." Chinese and Hongkong residents get in and out of this small country easily with their special pass, mostly to gamble. I went there not for the $bling bling$, but for the ruin of St. Paul's and the yummy Portuguese egg tart.

  4. pertama kali bermain dan berenang bersama Mia, si lumba2 sang terapis anak Autis di Gelanggang Samudra. What an experience!!! Sekarang gw ngerti kenapa orang2 bisa sukaaaaaaaa banget sama yg namanya dolphin. They are so smart and adorable... memang ciptaan Tuhan luar biasa.
  5. pertama kali abisin 4 jam di salon buat smoothing rambut...
  6. pertama kali kunjungin dokter kulit atas nama kecantikan... Suit suittt....
  7. pertama kali mewawancarai komposer klasik kenamaan Indonesia: Ibu Trisudji Kamal.

Hihihi... untung gw ngga disuruh nyanyi. Tapi sempet jadi pianis dadakan waktu acara dimulai dengan mengumandangkan lagu kebangsaan "Indonesia Raya."

Yang pasti summer 2006 penuh warna dan arti khusus buat gua -- encouraging and refreshing. I'm ready for a new semester now. New challenges are prepared before me, and I'm ready to face them with God's grace.

Welcome Fall 2006.. I'm ready!!!

Snoopy

FOR 50 YEARS, cartoonist Charles Schulz gave us pictures of ourselves wrapped in a smile. One of the last strips I clipped from our Sunday paper showed Snoopy the dog sitting on top of his doghouse with a typewriter, writing about his life. He titled his story . . .

The Dog Who Never Did Anything

Snoopy remembers it this way, “You stay home now,” they said, “and be a good dog.”
So he stayed home and was a good dog.
Then he decided to be even a better dog. So he barked at everyone who went by. And he even chased the neighbor’s cats.
“What’s happened to you?” they said. “You used to be such a good dog.”
So he stopped barking and chasing cats, and everyone said, “You’re a good dog.”
The moral, as Snoopy typed it, is “Don’t do anything and you’ll be a good dog.”
As I turned the smile around in my mind, I noticed a quirk of the English language. Snoopy and God have something in common. They are related not only by alphabet (dog and god), but by what “creatures in the middle” expect of them. The idea intrigued me enough to try another version.

The God Who Never Did Anything
“You give me what I want now,” they said, “and be a good God.”
So He gave them what they wanted and He was a good God.
Then He decided to be an even better God.
He started knocking over the furniture of other gods, and He used pain to help people in ways they could not understand.
“What’s happened to You?” they said.
“You used to be such a good God.”
So He stopped knocking over the furniture of other gods, and He stopped using pain in ways that were beyond people’s ability to understand.
And everyone said, “You’re a good God.”
The moral, as angels might see it, “Stop acting like God and people will think You’re good.”

The God We Want

Many of us imagine God as we want Him to be. To our wishes we add expectation. We expect Him to encourage us when we are afraid, to comfort us when we’re hurt, to forgive us when we fail, and to give us what we think we need when we think we need it.

Yet, along the way, we keep stumbling into the awareness that the King of Heaven is more apt to come to us in His own style, time, and mystery. He is seldom as we imagine Him to be. He is more like the God who reveals Himself in the pages of His own history.

There He comes to us in the unexpected surprises of joy, in the unwanted nights of our misery, and in the solitary sounds of our own loneliness. He comes to us in the unexpected joys of Adam, in the numbed grief of Eve, in the inconsolable tears of the childless Hannah, in the murderous anger of Moses, and in the madness of a powerful Nebuchadnezzar.

But me? Until He responds, I’d rather have it my way. In the moments of my dissatisfaction, I don’t want to have to wait for what I want. I want it now. Now. I’ll pray. I’ll pay. I’ll bargain. I’ll crawl on my knees. But I want God to prove that He is good—right now.

The God Who Has Been Good

Even in our “maturity” we can be like 2- and 3-year-olds pulling at the pant leg of heaven. Our Father isn’t surprised. He knows how to raise physical, emotional, and spiritual toddlers. He knows how to run with us in our youth, and how to walk with us at 74, 84, and 94.
And for those who go further, He is still there, hearing once again our whimpers in the night, and reaching down with the affection of an adoring mother who carefully lifts her children from their crib to herself.

No, He has not always been the kind of parent we wanted Him to be. Yes, He has been good on His terms rather than on ours. He has not answered our prayers in the way we asked. Seldom has He allowed anything to play out according to our own expectations or childish demands. Yet His determination to lead us in the paths of His own choosing is what has made Him so good.

The God Who Will Be Good

The promise of tomorrow comes with the wrinkled snapshots of yesterday. Even though our memories are not as sharp as we’d like them to be, and even though the happy times are mixed with regret, our albums contain memories of a God who keeps reminding us that He is better than our expectations. He is better than our demands. He is better than anything this life has to offer.

If He allowed a relationship to be lost, He stayed with us to remind us that we weren’t made for one another as much as we were made for Him. As our bodies give way to time, they become painful reminders that we were not made for these bodies. We were made for the One who said from the top of a thundering, burning mountain—to a people huddled in the middle of a life-threatening wilderness—“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.”

This is the God who, because He is good, refuses to “stay home and do nothing.”
Father, thank You for a man named Charles Schulz who brought us elements of truth amid our smiles. Thank You for being God on Your terms rather than ours. May Your name be hallowed as we wait on You. May Your kingdom be reflected in our patience. May Your will be done in our disappointments. Please, give us this day our daily bread.

Music for the spirit..

Today Michelle Williams (my violinist) and I have the priviledge of previewing our upcoming chamber recital in The Linschied's recidency. I know the Linschieds through Michelle; they go to the the English CMA church and have been serving in the music ministry together for the past couple years. A little background information about the Linschieds: Kyle (the host) holds a piano accompanying degree from the Eastman School of Music (the best music school in the nation) but is currently working for the FBI.. surprise, surprise.. [musicians break codes faster, i suppose.. haha..], and his wife Joannie holds a vocal performance degree from the University of Louisville, who is currently busy taking care of the 3 wonderful girls (with a new 7 month-old baby Lily).

Our host and hostess also invited 2 special guests for the evening: Pastor Doug Miller and his wife, Eddie. They used to be missionaries in Africa and France during the 60s-80s; their life experience in pastoring and their faithfulness in serving the Lord have always strengthen us as the body of Christ. Pastor Miller has been preaching in our Chinese CMA church for many years and he IS a Godly man that we really look up to. He has a been a great example to all of us. I have to admit that their appearance surprised me a bit.. hehehe... There's no doubt that Pastor Miller and his wife love music, and we also found out that Mrs. Miller used to be a music student as well.. what a revelation to us!

After a wonderful meal prepared by Joannie, we started the mini and private home concert previewing the music that Michelle and I will be playing for the recital next Saturday. Even though they were not intimating crowd of audience, the setting itself gave Michelle and I a taste of "performing it for real" experience. Not perfect... but it went extremely well. They really loved the selections of our pieces and seemed to enjoy every bit of it.

The wonderful evening didn't end there. By the audiences' request, Kyle played a solo piano piece by Rachmaninoff entitled Vocalise. It was beautiful... Joannie then joined his husband and sang a wonderful art song Roger Quilter and a hymn from an Episcopalian Hymn book. Ohh.. what a great couple! ;-)

As usual we love to hear Pastor Miller talk about his missionary experience and how he missed classical music when he served in the deep jungle of Africa. It was a great fellowship time for all of us since we all take part in music ministry and we share the same passion in music ministry. We get to share and exchange our thoughts on music in general, some of the issues faced by the evangelical churches' worship service these days, hymns vs contemporary worship songs, etc etc.

Somehow Pastor Miller stated his preference of having music that touches the spirit (not only to the emotion and soul). Since we're all so enthusiastic in this topic, Kyle turned on a recording of a choir singing an old hymn taken from the Episcopalian hymn book, accompanied by the grand pipe organ. The lyrics of the hymn are taken directly from John 6: 35-40, in which Jesus said "I'm the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty again... and I will raise him [those who believe in Him] up at the last day." Even though i was not familiar with the hymn, for some reason the tune, the lyrics, the arrangement, the choir, the organ piecered right into my heart. It sounded glorious and magnificent when it reached its climax stating that "... I will raise him up at the last day." Ohhhh my God... I can actually picture the moment when Christians are being brought up to the sky when Jesus comes for the 2nd time. I have to admit.. my eyes were wet at the end of that song. What a glorious day it will be. Can you imagine: those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ will be raised to the sky.. all... all of them... AT THE SAME TIME! What a scene it would be...

What an edifying evening.. not only i get to perform portion of the recital, but I felt that my spirit is fed by God through music, 1 of God's greatest gifts for mankind. I'm not too worried about my recital anymore. It will take place next saturday and we know that just as any performance, mistakes will surely happen... but it is not my main concern anymore. My main focus is now placed in gloryfying God and celebrating the wonderful music that He's given us. You will 'see' God in music...

It is my prayer that God will continue to lead me and use me as His instruments to declare His glory and power. May we all continue to use the gift of music to spread the Good News until He comes for the 2nd time, so that all of us can rise together in the sky at the last day.

Adorable Flaw

Interesting comment was thrown at me a couple days ago. My friend Elizabeth suddenly stopped me in the hall way and said "Pink, you look so cute with the freckles on your face. I'm serious... I think you will look 1/2 as cute without the freckle." Huuuuhhh.. ??? Whattttt????

Believe it or not, apparently she adored my freckles... It sounded totally weird to me. Women spend a fortune to eliminate black spots on their faces. Cosmetic business has always been great coz females put their utmost care on facial appearance. Well, i didn't actually spend a fortune to cover up what i thought was the flaw in my skin coz i knew it was genetic; my mom has it, so it's normal if i have it too. Even though it never really bothered me, i still consider it a flaw.

Anyway, sometimes what we call "flaw" in us appear to be adorable and admirable to others. What a paradox! Well.. life is full of it, so DO expect that with open heart.

Because He Lives!

May our faith through the resurrected Christ blossom daily like the flowers in the spring.
Let the victorious wonder confirm our belief that He is GOD!

Because He lives I can face tomorrow
Because He lives all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

HAPPY EASTER!
